PADUA COLLEGE CONFRATERNITY CARNIVAL 2017
June 25 - June 30, 2017
The Confraternity Carnival is an annual Schoolboys' Rugby League competition conducted by the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools' Rugby League (Q.I.S.S.R.L) and sponsored by Brothers Confraternity. The Carnival has been in existence since 1980 and in that time, has developed a reputation as one of the most formidable schoolboy rugby league competitions in Australia. The Carnival is played each year in a different city of Queensland and the competition is for the Open or Firsts team from each school. Teams take a squad of 20 players to the Carnival.
From humble beginnings in 1980 with just six teams, including Padua College, the Carnival now boasts 48 teams. The reputation has grown each year, resulting from a history of near perfect administration following the path and ideals of the Christian Brothers. They aim for the education and character building of young men to be reflected in this competition where an atmosphere of sportsmanship, respect, and fellowship prevails. Both administrators and players share these ideals and values.
The leadership, skill, and dedication of coaches, the sacrifices and co-operation of parents combine to create a special spirit among the players who unashamedly compete to win or lose with dignity and pride. For all teams, it becomes an honour to play in the Confraternity Carnival.
Spirit of the Carnival
The Confraternity Carnival has been able to successfully maintain a unique spirit for over 35 years. The carnival offers strict guidelines around fair play and sportsmanlike conduct.
In an era where aggression, hostility and self-admiration appear to dominate the attitude of young sportsmen, the Confraternity Carnival encourages healthy competition coupled with humility and respect for your opposition.
It is often said that young boys attend the Confraternity Carnival and upon completion, return to their schools as young men.
Since its inception, the Confraternity Carnival has produced 150 NRL players, 30 State of Origin and 20 Australian representatives. These include, but are not limited to:
QISSRL (Confraternity) Executive Member and former Australian representative, Lionel Williamson was also recently voted as a Men of League Hall of Fame Inductee.
The Host, Padua College
In 2017, Padua College will host the Confraternity Carnival at the College playing fields at Elliot Rd and the Australian Catholic University, Banyo. The carnival was last hosted by Padua in 2006.
To be held during the first week of Queensland schools’ mid-year break (June 25 - June 30, 2017), the carnival will bring 960 of the State’s premier independent school students to Brisbane for the week. They will be joined by over 200 staff volunteers from the same schools as coaching and support staff. In addition, an anticipated 3000 – 5000 parents, family and general spectators are expected to attend the carnival. The carnival provides a unique opportunity for our State’s finest leadership/elite athlete/academic students from Queensland’s Independent and predominantly Catholic schools.
